MaaS and MMTIS

Mobility as a Service builds on travel information. MMTIS is about the information layer.

What is MaaS?

Mobility as a Service (MaaS) means integrating different transport services into a single digital service that the traveller can use to plan, book and pay for journeys. Instead of separate apps and tickets for the train, the bus and the shared bike, one service handles them together.

How MaaS differs from MMTIS

  • MMTIS is about information: making travel and traffic data available so services can show multimodal options. See what is MMTIS.
  • MaaS adds transactions: booking, ticketing and payment across providers.

The revised ITS Directive also addresses digital mobility services; check the directive and national rules for the details.

Why MaaS needs MMTIS data

A MaaS service must know where the stops are, when vehicles run, what is delayed and which shared vehicles are available. That is exactly what static and dynamic data published through National Access Points provide. Without open, standard data, every MaaS provider would have to build many one-off integrations.

What MaaS adds

  • Fare and product information, and the ability to buy tickets.
  • Booking of on-demand and shared services.
  • Unified payment and customer support.
  • Sometimes bundles or subscriptions covering several modes.

Data formats

Information for MaaS builds on the same formats as for travel information: NeTEx (including fares), SIRI, GTFS and GBFS. See data formats.
